I have already posted a number of articles on senior graduation loss and how it will impact the West Region but Rich Kern has the data for all of DIII. I don’t want to repeat myself here but since I’ve already forgotten what I had written, I’m sure it will happen.
The big number that I look at with respect to senior graduation loss is the points. Points are the number of kills + Service Aces + Blocks. Blocks are calculated as 0.5 points for a block assist and 1 point for a solo block. It’s a measure of how many points a player earned for the team while on the floor. The Rich Kern data file also includes assists, digs as well as the negative stats like hitting errors and reception errors.
There are 35 teams in all of DIII that will not lose a single point to senior graduation loss in 2019. Interestingly, there are only 2 teams in the Pablo Rankings that finished in the top 100 and both teams are from the West Region – CMS and UMHB. Other Pablo Top 100 teams with low points loss (< 10%) are UW-Stevens Point (Pablo 39 / 0.33% Points Loss), Concordia Texas (72 / 1.08%), Case Western Reserve (77 / 1.43%), JWU (9 / 1.59%), Sewanee (92 / 1.6%), Susquehanna (60 / 2.03%), Dominican (100 / 2.16%), Elmhurst (90 / 2.77%), Amherst (42 / 4.31%), Stevens (87 / 4.34%), Dubuque (62 / 6.17%), Carthage (30 / 7.33%), Hiram (38 / 7.68%), Ohio Wesleyan (97 / 9.35%), Chris Newport (66 / 9.39%) and Ohio Northern (22 / 9.69%).
Both UT-Tyler and Thomas More made the list but they will not be in DIII next season.
The top teams losing their 5-1 setters will be MIT, Gustavus Adolphus, Cornell, Augsburg, UW-Eau Claire, Loras, Otterbein, Concordia (WI), Wellesley, Wartburg, Emory and Hiram. (There are actually more teams than this but I had to cutoff the assist percentage at some point.)
The top teams losing at least 50% of their digs will be Pacific Lutheran, Lakeland, IWU, Chapman, Gustavus Adolphus, MIT, Heidelberg, Lewis & Clark, Wittenberg, Augsburg and Wellesley.
Back to the points column and the Pablo Top 100 teams losing 50% or more of their points are IWU (77.89%), Gustavus Adolphus (59.7%), Lewis & Clark (57.9%), Pacific Lutheran (56.47%), St. Thomas (54.86%), WUSTL (51.72%) and Otterbein (50.23%).
That points loss by IWU is just amazing and things don’t look good for Gustavus Adolphus as they appear on all three of lists you don’t want to be on.
