On Monday, the American Southwest Conference (ASC) Council of Presidents announced that commissioner Amy Carlton will be stepping down from that position by June 30th. Amy has been a member of the conference staff for over 21 years with the last 17 years as commissioner. She has also served within DIII in a number of roles and had over 20 years experience in colleges prior to her ASC career. A search committee has been formed to find her replacement.
I mentioned in my recent podcast how it’s really tough to be a conference commissioner right now with all of the movement that is happening in DIII and the ASC has seen teams come and go in recent years. No reason was given for Amy leaving, but my hope is that she was just done with the insanity inherent in the position and wanted to enjoy her life. I was able to meet Amy a few years back and she was super nice to me and has always helped out the site when she could.
The ASC has lost a few teams recently and look to drop down to 7 members when McMurry and Sul Ross State leave the conference. Still, they are in a good position and an attractive home for most DIII programs. It will be interesting to see if the new person hired makes it a priority to add additional members to the conference.
I wish Amy all the best and the ASC the best in finding a replacement.
